DMV and Government Scheduling Numbers
You Don't Have to Pay to Book
Government agencies (like the DMV, IRS, or SSA) do not charge "booking fees" or "expedition fees" to schedule an appointment over the phone.
Because government phone lines are notoriously difficult to get through, scammers set up fake "expedited scheduling" services. They typo-squat legitimate DMV numbers or buy ads on search engines to appear at the top of results.
The Paid Booking Scam
If you dial one of these numbers, a representative will offer to navigate the complex DMV system for you and book your appointment—for a fee of $50 to $100. What they don't tell you is that they are simply filling out the free online form on the official government website on your behalf.

State DMV Rules
Every state DMV operates its own phone system. Before dialing a number you found online:
- Ensure the website you got the number from ends in .gov (e.g., dmv.ca.gov). Scammers use .org or .com domains to look official.
- If the automated system asks for a credit card before connecting you to an agent, hang up immediately.
